Mussina Wins 20th For First Time In Career

Oct 15, 2014 1:09 AM

Mike Mussina won his twentieth game of the season on Sunday as the Yankees defeated the Red Sox. New York beat Boston 6-2, thanks to a strong performance from Mussina. He pitched six innings of shutout ball, striking out three batters and walking two. Mussina had never won twenty games in his career, coming close several times, and is now the oldest pitcher in MLB history to reach to milestone for the first time. The righty, who will turn 40 in December, finished the season with a 20-9 record and a 3.37 ERA and 150 strikeouts in 200 1/3 innings for the Yankees. He will be a free agent this winter, and hasn't yet decided whether or not he'll pitch next season. The Red Sox tacked on two runs in the eighth inning, to make the score 3-2, but the Yankees added three insurance runs in the ninth inning on Jonathan Papelbon. After the final out, recorded by Mariano Rivera, each one of his Yankee teammates took the time to congratulate Mussina. "It sounds pretty good I guess, I've been close," Mussina said after the game. "The guys played real solid, it's been a fun day." He revealed that Joe Girardi told him earlier in the week that he'd have all the arms in the bullpen ready to help Mussina if needed. "It took me a long time to get to something like this," he said of being the oldest pitcher ever to accomplish the feat. His season is over, but he's not sure if he'll call it a career just yet. "I don't know, we gotta get away from it a little bit," Mussina said about his possible retirement. "If it is [his last game] this was kind of a nice way to end it."

Brewers Edge Mets For NL Wild Card

New York lost 4-2 to Florida at Shea Stadium, the final game ever played there, to end their year on the final day of the regular season for the second-straight September. The game was tied at 2 apiece heading into the eighth, but Scott Schoeneweis and Luis Ayala combined to give up two runs in the inning. Damion Easley pinch hit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and walked with Ryan Church on deck. Church flied out to deep right, ending the Mets season. The Brewers will take on the Phillies in the NLDS.

Twins, White Sox Continue To Struggle

Sep 20, 2014 2:14 AM

The Twins and White Sox, who have combined to lose their last seven games, are struggling to win with a playoff berth on the line. The Twins have a half-game lead over the White Sox through Sept. 27's games. Minnesota, losers of their last two, will face Kansas City in their season finale on Sunday. The Royals defeated the Twins 4-2 on Saturday. Chicago, losers of their last five, will battle Cleveland on Sunday before facing Detroit on Monday in a makeup game. If the Twins win on Sunday, and the White Sox lose, Minnesota would lock up the AL Central and the league's final postseason berth. Scott Baker will take the mound for the Twins against the Royals' Brandon Duckworth. Chicago will have Mark Buehrle starting against Cleveland's Bryan Bullington on Sunday, while Gavin Floyd will pitch for the Sox on Monday versus Detroit's Freddy Garcia. The AL Central winner will face the Al East champion Rays in the ALDS.
